Back to ContentsClosing date for SGS Scholarship Applications is April 14th, 2008. Scholarships are made possible by corporate donations and member sponsorship of our Golf Tournament Fundraiser held at Money Hill Golf & Country Club annually in the Spring. The SGS thanks you all for your continued support.
Congratulations to the Bill Blair Scholarship Award Recipients 2007: Patricia Tsai & Madeline Yoste
Congratulations to the University Earth Science Award Recipients 2007: LSU: Corine Armstrong, ULL: John Rosen & UNO: Jennafer Brooks
Our parent society SEG also runs a Scholarship Program and Arslan Tashmukhambetov (Post Grad. from UNO) was a recipient of an SEG Scholarship Award this past year. Congratulations Arslan! If you have any questions in regard to the SEG Scholarship please e-mail scholarships@seg.org
The Southeastern Geophysical Society (SGS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Geophysics and related Subsurface Sciences, and is an affiliate of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). The SGS is headquartered out of New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. and includes members principally in the Gulf Coast Area, but also globally.
SGS offers professional recognition amongst one's peers and the community as well as an organization that is an active and proud sponsor of student scholarship programs in local universities. The SGS organizes technical luncheons monthly from September through May of each year offering an opportunity for members and non-members to share technical experiences and interact professionally and socially.
Additional yearly functions include a Social Membership drive each Fall, and the Annual Spring Golf Tournament where prizes and good times outnumber scores.
This year the SGS plans to offer a continued forum of visibility in the Geoscience profession including efforts to help secure active SEG memberships for those who are qualified.
Among other benefits to membership are:
This years tournament was held Thursday March 20th, the day after the Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 206. We had a record (in recent memory) 31 teams signed up who enjoyed beautiful weather, camaraderie, a crawfish boil and, as always, good times outnumbered many of the scores. I would personally like to thank Don DuBose and Tabbie Benanti without whose help behind the scenes we wouldn't have had such a successful day.

29 November 2007—Rodney Calvert, Shell chief scientist and 2005 SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor, passed away in Houston (USA) on 22 November 2007 after a long illness.
“I join Leon Thomsen to express my deep sadness at the loss of a great geophysicist,” SEG 2007-2008 President Fred Aminzadeh said.
Calvert was born 7 September 1944 in Rugby, England. Calvert started his geoscience career measuring continental drift in Iceland from 1966-69 as part of his PhD research. He joined Royal Dutch Shell in The Hague as a seismic processor. His career took him to Malaysia, the UK, Canada and the United States in various operational and technical assignments, and culminated in his position as a chief scientist for Geophysics.
He was heavily involved with Shell’s early 3D efforts in the North Sea. He held several research and management positions in geophysics and integrated reservoir characterization before concentrating on 4D.
“The past months I have been corresponding with him about 'virtual sources' and other facts of life,” commented Kees Wapenaar, SEG Editor. “It impressed me how much interested he was in discussing science, while his health was letting him down. The geophysical community loses a great character and an excellent scientist.”
Calvert always combined his love for science with his love for nature. He never stopped learning, always sharing what he knew or discovered with his colleagues and friends. His passion for hiking, windsurfing, sailing, skiing, rollerblading, and scuba diving were known to all, as were the connections he made between these hobbies and the physics that made them possible. A truly caring and unselfish teacher and collaborator throughout his life, he educated a generation of scientists who remember him for his unfathomable creativity and intuition, and unorthodox approaches and solutions to any problem at hand, including his final battle against cancer.
He joined SEG in 2001. Just before his illness was diagnosed, he had completed a year-long tour around the world as the 2005 SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor. He presented “Insights and Methods for 4D Reservoir Monitoring and Characterization,” in 25 locations worldwide and drew excellent reviews.
From 2001 to 2006, Calvert and Andrey Bakulin developed the virtual source method at Shell’s Bellaire Technology Center, and Shell obtained an early patent on it. Their paper on the method, “The virtual source method: Theory and case study,” received honorable mention for Best Paper in Geophysics in 2006.
Calvert was an author of the Best Paper presented at the 2006 Annual Meeting, “Virtual shear check shot with airguns”. His co-authors were Albena Alexandrova Mateeva, Andrey Bakulin and Patsy R. Jorgensen.
Calvert also has been an associate editor for Geophysics
